What is 'Boys Into Healthcare'?

It is no secret that the healthcare sector has an incredibly large gap between male and female employees, with there being approximately double the number of women than men working for the NHS as of 31st March 2022.

This programme, taking place across Spring 2024, aims to challenge this statistic, debunking misconceptions about the NHS, in an effort to encourage more Boys into Healthcare. Our programme, designed to break gender stereotypes and broaden horizons, is a two-part experience that aims to engage, educate and inspire Year 10 boys who hold an interest in healthcare.

What’s included in the Boys Into Healthcare programme?

What are the varying roles that enable the NHS to function? Who carries out these roles? Which skills are required for such roles to be carried out effectively? These are the questions that will be asked and reflected upon in the first part of the programme, an in-school workshop. Through engaging activities and interactive sessions,  gain insight into various NHS roles, demystifying preconceived notions and stereotypes. Encouraging self-reflection, the workshop empowers boys to envision themselves as valuable contributors to the healthcare landscape.

The second aspect of Boys into Healthcare is a dynamic taster day on campus at the University of Leeds. Your students will delve into the realms of nursing, cardiac physiology and medical ultrasound. Guided by experienced professionals and students, we hope to provide a taster into what these fields entail, while enabling partakers to foster a genuine understanding of the crucial roles they hold in the healthcare sector!
